About Prebona DuraClean

There is an increasing need to protect building surfaces from decay and make surfaces stronger and self-cleaning to reduce maintenance costs. Applying Prebona DuraClean


Surface to be treated should be clean and dry.


Always test a non-visible area first.


Apply Prebona DuraClean with low pressure spray.


Treated surface should be wet but not dripping.


The treated area is ready to use when the product has dried.

The Technology Behind Prebona DuraClean

The main reasons for decay of carbonatic building materials are acid rain and dry deposition of SO2. Acidic air pollutants such as SOx and NOx react with water – in the form of rain or air moisture – and form acidic solutions (pH=3–6). Such liquids react easily with carbonatic material, causing their dissolution. One dissolution product is gypsum (CaSO4・2H2O), which dissolves easily in water and, as a salt solution, penetrates deeper into the material. After evaporation of water, crystallization of gypsym results in pressure exertion, which cause disintegration of the surface layer. Ultimately, the whole surface layer may fall off.

Another important reason for decay of building material is soiling. Soiled building materials are more damp, providing possibilities for water to create freeze-thaw damage and make a good feeding ground for algae and moss, which over time damage building materials. Prebona DuraClean makes building surfaces dry.

Prebona DuraClean reduces decay processes described above. It easily penetrates pores of the material. The surface-modified colloidal silica particles present in Prebona DuraClean aggregate at the bottle-neck areas separating the pores. When critical concentration of silica particles is exceeded, a protective layer is formed on the pore walls, making the material resistant to low pH of acid rain.

When more Prebona DuraClean is applied to the surface, blockage of pores of the material will occur and the surface will become self cleaning and more resistant to water penetration. This effect is purely physical. The silica particles in Prebona DuraClean reduce intrusion of water from outside, making the surface dry. The space between the silica particles allows the treated material to breathe.
